With the high school fall sports season right around the corner, a number of local organizations are working together to provide free physicals to area athletes without health insurance.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requires all high school athletes to have a sports physical before participating in any sport. The Dane County Sports Medicine Council is joining the UW Health Sports Medicine Center and UW School of Medicine and Public Health to provide free physicals to the county's uninsured high school athletes.

UW Health physicians, trainers, medical students and Spanish translators will be at the Access Community Health Center at 2202 S. Park St. from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19 to provide both athletic physicals and immunizations.

Athletes are asked to arrive at specific times according to their last names. Those with last names beginning with the letters A-H should arrive at 6 p.m., I-P at 6:45 p.m. and Q-Z at 7:30 p.m.

Parents are encouraged to accompany their children and must be present in order for a child to receive immunizations. All athletes are asked to wear shorts. Females should also wear tank tops.

Athletes with health insurance should contact their primary-care physician for a physical.
